The Human Condition

I pass this location a dozen times during the week. At first, there's nothing to recommend it. Then I realized that the juxtaposition of the auto shop, the apartment building, and the church spoke to the human condition. Just needed a grey day. I wanted to keep the church slightly out of focus. The church is an interesting architectural study in itself; perhaps one day...

I chose the above image to represent the look I was seeking. I spied a truck approaching and thought that it would add an industrial, frenetic feel to the scene if shot at a slow shutter speed. Extra bonus; the slow shutter speed captures the falling snow.

The original image is busy. The truck frames the background well and reduces the scene's business; otherwise, the image needs a crop to better emphasize the intended content.
The original colour image and two crops in B&W. I prefer the narrower of the two B&W crops. I re-cropped the original image to produce the third crop in colour. I think the B&W and colour crops, coupled with the perspective on the apartment building, produce nice leading lines to the church. The colour crop does a better job of framing the steeple between the apartment building and the telephone pole. The touch of colour adds irony to the scene.
